summary
Dr. Jagan in
“Straight Talk” advocated the need for a FREE PRESS.
During the term of office of the PPP government and run
up to the 1964 elections the press has made a sudden
turn to the advocacy of strikes, rebellion and general
uprising, sensationalism, big lies and incitement to
violence. The Evening Post, Chronicle and Argosy were
constantly calling for blood ad mayhem to bring down the
Jagan Government. “No freedom until the Jagans are
removed” was the banner of the reactionary press and big
business. A national newspaper which constantly
champions the cause of democracy, nationalism,
anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism and socialism is
needed.
