Essequibo: Cheddi Jagan Biodiversity Park Function
As a special programme
honouring the Memory of both Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan there
was a Cultural Presentation and Lectures on Sunday 28th March 2010 at
the Cheddi Jagan Biodiversity Park, Lima Sands, Essequibo.
The main aspect
comprising of lectures featured brief presentations by former
Essequibo Region Member of Parliament Heeralall Mohan, and Regional
Vice Chairman and Isahack Basir, long standing PPP representative and
Regional official. Comrade Mohan related seven points of development
associated with Mrs. Janet Jagan. Comrade Basir concentrated on the
historical trends established by the People’s Progressive Party, and
identified what the colours of the party flag represented. Before the
PPP there had been no other institution that had organised and
mobilised the working people to struggle and to unite for their
rights.
To mark the first year
since the death of Janet Jagan two large granite stones, 3 ft x 2 ft
were painted and inscribed with the names Cheddi Jagan and Janet
Jagan. These were placed on display and created quite an interest.
Teachers from several
schools within the sub region were present, including some from Lima
Sands Primary, the Moslem representative from the Charity masjid and
others. There were also special invitees from the Essequibo Technical
Institute, the Essequibo branch of the Guyana School of Agriculture as
well as six overseas guests from Canada and the United States.
The programme
commenced at 10:00 hrs. Mrs. Sabra Basir was also included amongst the
speakers. There was also a wreath laying ceremony to honour the two
national, state and party leaders. Those who laid floral tributes were
Sabra Basir on behalf of the women of the Region; Heeralall Mohan on
behalf of Region Two (Supenaam/Charity); Rambarran Dass on behalf of
the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) and Farouk
Basir on behalf of the Progressive Youth Organisation.
To round off events
there was a stirring rendition of the Party Song.
